Around Dodge City and in the territory on west -- there’s just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers -- and that’s with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of “Gunsmoke”! “Gunsmoke” starring William Conrad. The story of the violence that moved west with young America -- and the story of a man who moved with it. I’m that man, Matt Dillon, United States Marshal -- the first man they look for and the last they want to meet. It’s a chancy job -- and it makes a man watchful...and a little lonely.

In the 1870s, Dodge City, Kansas was located at the end of a very long cattle trail called The Great Western Cattle Trail, The Dodge City trail, or The Old Texas Trail. During the American War Between The States, the Civil War, cattle herds in the State of Texas had grown very large, since the south did not want beef delivered to the north during the conflict. As a result, at the end of the war, a method had to be found to market the animals by driving them north on cattle trails to cities that had access to the railroad. Herd attendants, or cowboys, were hired for the fourteen hundred mile drive, By the time they arrived at the railhead after sleeping in the open, eating miles and miles of dust, being served bad chuck wagon food, and enduring foul cattle smells, they were ready for a rip roaring time, which sometimes led to conflicts with the townspeople and the law officers who were protecting them.

Gunsmoke was an adult western and was the creation of writer, John Meston, and producer-director, Norman Macdonnell. It absolutely took the country by storm. Variety Magazine, called it "an amazing presentation," and The New York Times labeled it "Something new and entirely exciting in radio." Program stories centered around the cattle town of Dodge City, Kansas in the 1870s. If there ever was a program that accurately depicted the raw violence and danger of the early American west, radio Gunsmoke was it.

Read by Nick Santa Maria

The Spider — who was really Richard Wentworth, a true American aristocrat — had fought a hundred battles and faced a thousand foes... But never before had a more brilliant criminal genius challenged him. For the Boss, employing a horrible, new weapon, ruled the Underworld with an iron hand, slaughtering, maddening, and loosing maniacs to ravage the nation...!

The most compelling of the classic pulp heroes, Richard Wentworth had a fiancĂ©, a coterie of equally committed aides, and a tense relationship with Stanley Kirkpatrick, Wentworth’s best friend, but also sworn to send the Spider to the electric chair—no matter who he turns out to be.

These riveting stories ran the gamut of incendiary thrillers to ultra-violent showdowns between an obsessed superhero and his depraved arch-foes. Manhattan is the backdrop for Wentworth’s apocalyptic adventures. A new skyline has arisen over the penthouses, nightclubs, breadlines, and ghettos of the Big Apple. With the repeal of Prohibition, wealthy gangsters are in search for new rackets. And standing ready to keep them in check, the dreaded Spider.

Author and former crime reporter Norvell W. Page, who penned the majority of the Spider’s exploits as Grant Stockbridge in Popular Publications’ infamous pulp magazine, The Spider, once described his hero in gigantic but unflinching terms: “His exploits had raised him to the proportions of a legendary hero. In ancient times, Rome would have made him an emperor-god. Salem might have burned him as a sorcerer. The modern world—well, the police had offered rewards totaling thousands of dollars for his capture ‘dead or alive.’ And the Underworld hated him and plotted his destruction with a fierceness bred of abject terror.

Nick Santa Maria takes on the dual persona of Richard Wentworth and his arachnid alter-ego for this nail-biting audio rendition of Overlord of the Damned originally published in The Spider magazine, October, 1935.

First off, just wanted to thank you for all that you and the rest of the folks at Radio Archives do! Loving every set I've purchased from you guys, and continue to be blown away by how full and clear the sound quality is. Thanks so much. Keep doing what you're doing! Especially with the thriller/horror anthologies! I'm a huge fan of my Inner Sanctum and Murder at Midnight sets.

Jean Marie Stine writes:
I have been reading the Spider for about 50 years, ever since a fan offered to let me read some of his copies of the original pulp. It was a wow. For years I bought every paperback, etc., but as you know for all those years there was not much. But I hit the treasure trove when you started putting them out as ebooks. At last all the issues coming out at a price that made buying 100 issues affordable.

A Talent For Revenge

The Specialist #1: “A Talent For Revenge” by John Cutter (reported to be John Shirley). Either the author or the publisher didn’t know where they wanted to go with this series at first. The first two stories are different in that this one is international and deals with mercenaries working for an African leader trying to regain his power in Africa, and the second is a vigilante affair in New York. This current novel does hint at the plot of the second story. At one point The Specialist, Jack Sullivan, wipes out a Mafia stronghold in France and rescues several young Americans who were held for white slavery. He will go after the leaders of the white slavery gang in the second novel. But this novel is full of action, even if it seems a clone of all the other men’s action novels out there. Sullivan must assault a well-guarded mansion on a cliff to kill the African leader, at the same time rescuing a young rich girl who has fallen in love with The Specialist. Fairly good, but I liked the second issue in the series better.

The Smugglers #1

The Smugglers #1: “The Smugglers” by Paul Petersen (in collaboration with David Olyphant). Eric Saveman runs Shelter, a drug smuggling operation, and drives expensive automobiles, and has two gorgeous blondes living with him. Two giant corporations are keeping their eye on him and his father, Doc, though. Something happened years ago that involved his father in Africa with the men he worked with. Now someone wants Doc killed, and Eric working for them, but which corporation is the good guy, and which is the bad one? As a rule most men’s action novels are terrible, and I hate to hear the new groups call them pulp paperbacks, and the characters the new pulp anti-hero, etc. Pulps were never this bad. And I thought I had read the worst of the stuff until I read this one. The only way it got published is the writer’s name. The writing is poor, the dialogue is terrible, and the plot is screwy. It’s some of the worst stuff I’ve read, and I’ve read most men’s action novels. I think the series ran for seven issues, and if sales were good it was because of the covers, not the text.

The Great Gildersleeve became one of radio's most successful situation comedies, and sixty years after it left the airwaves, it continues to be a favorite among old-time radio fans. As portrayed by Peary, the Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve character — who, on Fibber McGee, had a pronounced larcenous streak — mellowed considerably, settling into the comfortable role of kind and loving uncle to his niece and nephew. Assisted in the running the household by housekeeper Birdie Lee Coggins (Lillian Randolph). Outside the home, Gildersleeve's closest association was with Judge Horace Hooker (Earle Ross), with whom he had many battles during the first few broadcast seasons.

Singer and actor Harold Peary who brought the pompous and cantankerousness Gildersleeve to life, began his radio career back in 1923. A first generation American born to Portuguese parents, Peary’s real name was JosĂ© Pereira de Faria ; but he changed it to make it easier to find work in the entertainment industry. While he had his own show as a singer, The Spanish Serenader, in San Francisco, it was only when he moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1937. It was Chicago when his career began to take off and soar when he became a regular on Fibber McGee and Molly because of his ability to voice and portray many different characters and their nationalities.

It was writer Don Quinn who thought up the name of Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve. Quinn named McGee’s nemesis that name because it was the most pompous name he could think of. Gildersleeve’s middle name remained one of radio’s most endearing mysteries until Fibber McGee and Molly found Gildersleeve’s personal dairy and began reading it in the October 22, 1940 episode of the Fibber McGee and Molly show. The full name of Fibber’s friendly nemesis is Throckmorton Philharmonic Gildersleeve.

So sit back and enjoy the twelve original broadcasts offered in this collection and presented exactly as broadcast, complete with commercials for Kraft Foods.

Read by Milton Bagby

The news spread like wild-fire. A man had solved the problem of the ages — he was bringing the dead back to life! Operator #5, ace of the American Secret Service, recognized the grave menace. He realized the danger if the gigantic advances of modern science were employed selfishly by unscrupulous men. And that precisely was the danger facing his native land! The Master of Death, using the promise of life everlasting, was cunningly building an army of fanatic, half-mad followers, men who were burning, pillaging and slaying at the will of the man-monster they worshipped!

From out of the pages of Operator #5 magazine steps a dramatic hero who pits himself against threats to national security from all origins. Whether it’s a subversive internal threat, or a full-scale invasion from an enemy land, James Christopher stood ready and resolute to defeat it.

James Christopher did not technically belong to the U. S. Secret Service. He was a top agent for an America’s unnamed Intelligence Service. It was in his blood. His father, John Christopher, retired from the same agency years before. Answerable only to his superior, Z-7, and carrying a letter from the President of the United States identifying him as Operator #5, Jimmy Christopher played for keeps. He carried a rapier sewn into his belt, and in a golden skull hanging from his watch-chain was a reservoir of poison to be taken in the event of capture.

Aided by a small group of trusted assistant, ranging from his twin sister Nan to scrappy street urchin Tim Donovan, Jimmy Christopher was a one-man defense force. Into this unprecedented crisis plunged Jimmy Christopher. Only one man, but a man who embodied the American spirit — and stands prepared to perish to protect his country.

The Army of the Dead is read with stirring intensity by Milton Bagby. Originally published in the March 1935 issue of Operator #5 magazine.
