“The story you are about to hear is true. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent.”

These words were just the beginning of the authenticity of one of the best remembered radio programs of all time. Although not the first to base its stories on real cases,Dragnet most assuredly was best in assuring that each program was as realistic as possible, from the first step heard to the last word spoken. This is evident in every episode featured in Dragnet, Volume 9 from Radio Archives!

Dragnet creator and star Jack Webb insisted from the moment in 1948 when he was inspired to create the program that it would be as true to life as possible. After recording an audition, Webb approached the Los Angeles Police Department for its approval, which was given under certain conditions. Webb agreed to each one, even carrying his desire for realism farther than the police demanded.

Dragnet portrayed each procedure followed by policemen accurately, but took this accuracy even further. If a policeman read a description from a report, then listeners heard a page flip as descriptions were beyond the first page in an actual report. Steps from one office to the other or up the front steps of the police station numbered exactly the same as they did in real life.

Each episode on Dragnet, Volume 9 rings with the realism Jack Webb demanded and is restored to sparkling audio quality. Get ‘Just The Facts’ with Dragnet, Volume 9 from Radio Archives!

In the 1950s, it was fairly common for a long-running radio series to be adapted for television -- but it was practically unheard of for a successful TV series to make its way to radio. But, on November 23, 1958, that's exactly what happened when the CBS Television series Have Gun, Will Travel came to CBS Radio.

On radio, Paladin was played by John Dehner, a talented character actor who had made his name in featured roles on similar radio series such as "Gunsmoke" and "Frontier Gentleman." (Dehner, whose portrayal of Paladin was a bit more arch, suave, and sleek than his TV counterpart, had in fact earlier turned down the leading role of Sheriff Matt Dillon in "Gunsmoke" for fear of being typecast in western roles.) Dehner was understandably concerned about becoming nothing more than a pale copy of Richard Boone, and so insisted on making the role uniquely his own; radio historian John Dunning describes Dehner's portrayal as "a streamlined version, perhaps slighter of build...but just as deadly." The same smooth and slightly menacing voice that had made him such an effective villain on such series as "Escape" and "The Adventures of Philip Marlowe," made him an equally effective Paladin — someone you might enjoy an intellectual discussion with over a glass of decent sherry, but also someone you wouldn't want to disagree with too aggressively for too long. This collection offers the first twenty episodes of "Have Gun, Will Travel," dating from 1958 and 1959.

Beginning with Tarzan, the pulp era was full of jungle heroes. Jungle Jim is one of the unique ones. He wasn’t a barely-literate loincloth-clad tree-dwelling wild man, but rather Jim Bradley, a “great white hunter” in the mold of heroes of earlier popular fiction such as H. Rider Haggard's Allan Quatermain and Lord John Roxton from Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World, who represented the colonial view of the so-called primitive regions of the globe. This gave him a distinctive difference from your run-of-the-mill jungle man, who often knew little about civilization and was equipped with not much more than a knife in most cases. Also, his stomping grounds were located in exotic southeastern Asia.

The Adventures of Jungle Jim was on the air weekly from 1935 to 1954, with announcer Glenn Riggs (among others). The show brought listeners tales of slave traders, pirates, foreign spies, wild beasts, poachers, hostile tribes, and, during World War II, the Japanese, as Jim often served as an Allied operative. Intended for a general audience, the series' storylines are richer than the usual juvenile radio fare. Jungle Jim was so popular that in addition to his radio show, he also starred in film, comic books, comic strips and even television adaptations, portrayed notably by Johnny Weismuller in his post-Tarzan days. This volume contains the first 40 fifteen minute episodes of The Adventures of Jungle Jim.

Will Murray's Pulp Classics #42
Read by Nick Santa Maria. Liner Notes by Will Murray

Out of war-torn skies soars…G-8 and His Battles Aces! The greatest combat pilot of the War to End All Wars, G-8’s true name was stricken from all official records. Flying a supercharged warplane, backed by his wild wingmen, Bull Martin and Nippy Weston, G-8 fought the most horrific foes the Kaiser could throw at him.

Patrol of the Cloud Crusher, is a particularly wild tale torn from the June, 1936 issue. Hogan outdoes himself by pitting his hero against an astounding threat—titanic disembodied hands reach out of the clouds to ensnare and crush Allied aircraft! Even the Master Spy is baffled.

It begins with a ghostly hand that snatched an important clue and vanished! If that wasn't baffling enough, a patrol flying past a giant cloud encountered a monster arm whose crushing fingers destroyed their warplanes.

Taking to the skies, G-8 rushes to investigate the so-called Hand of Providence that had seemingly taken the German side in the war. But it was one thing to fly into that hell cloud. Quite another to survive the encounter!

When the Flying Spy and his Battle Aces take on the challenge of the Patrol of the Cloud Crusher, will they return––or will their own aircraft be pulverized by the seemingly supernatural power? Herr Doctor Kreuger strikes again!

by John Lawrence with an introduction by Ed Hulse
Read by Milton Bagby

New York-based private investigator Cass Blue is a morally flexible tough guy who backs up his hard-boiled rhetoric with frequent applications of the blackjack he carries in a hip pocket. No case is too seedy or sordid for him to take, and he’s capable of taking as much as he dishes out when it’s necessary. The cops don’t trust him much more than they do the criminals, but that doesn’t keep him from giving clients full value for their retainers. With the dubious assistance of speakeasy owner Al Lascoine, Cass sasses and slugs his way through a succession of Depression-era adventures.

The Cass Blue yarns are related in the first person by stylish pulp writer John Lawrence, who guides his protagonist through a maze of exciting plots and countless gunfights. What the series lacks in polish and innovation, it makes up for with vigorous action and the tough-as-nails attitude that gave Dime Detective the distinctive flavor that made it the most important crime pulp excepting the legendary Black Mask.

Ed Hulse writes the introduction "The Ten-Cent Sleuths: Dime Detective Revisited". The Complete Cases of Cass Blue Audiobook, Volume 1 contains the following stories, “The Bloodstone,” “The Corpse Was Cold,” “The Corpse Control,” and “Calling All Cars!” Read by the talented voice actor, Milton Bagby.

From Canada, now prostrate under a tyrant rule, had come the threat that warned Operator 5. The three bandit nations of Europe were planning a monstrous, unprovoked invasion of this country — and he must cross the sea with two hundred volunteer aides in a desperate undercover battle. One by one, the gallant members of that doomed company of patriots died, willing sacrifices on the altar of patriotism, buried in foreign fields. Finally, having matched the enemy’s secret agents, man for man, Operator 5 alone was left to confront that mighty, mechanized army, already landed and ravaging freedom’s sacred shores! Jimmy Christopher, clean-cut, square-jawed and clear-eyed, was the star of the most audacious pulp magazines ever conceived — Operator #5. Savage would-be conquerors, creepy cults, weird weather-controllers and famine-creating menaces to our mid-western breadbasket... these were but a few of the fiendish horrors that Jimmy Christopher was forced to confront. Operator #5 and the Purple Invasion series returns in vintage pulp tales, reissued for today’s readers in electronic format. $2.99.

Dusty Ayres and his Battle Birds #27 February 1935 The Black Avenger
This is the eighth issue in the Dusty Ayres series. “To Captain Ayres: The greatest among us has died by your hand. We, the living, are pledged to avenge that loss. Within forty-eight hours you and your comrades will be wiped from the face of the earth. Nothing can save you!” This message, signed Ekar, was dropped on Dusty’s drome; at the same time another Yank air field nearby was wiped out by a new horror weapon — a flaming rain that destroyed everything it touched! How can America fight this new menace? How can she keep the Blacks from crossing her borders? Captain Dusty Ayres, ace pilot for the U.S. Air Defense flies in the Silver Flash, an advanced craft of his own design. With his two pals Curly Brooks and Biff Bolton, they battle some of the most diabolical mad scientists and their weirdest inventions. These exciting stories took over the Battle Birds magazine from June 1934 through the July/August issue of 1935, changing the magazine name to Dusty Ayres and his Battle Birds. And now Dusty Ayres and his Battle Birds is back, reissued for today’s readers in electronic format. $2.99.

The jade-robed Buddhist priest who battled crime as The Green Lama is back! Conceived in 1939 at the behest of the editors of Munsey Publications to compete with The Shadow, it was an outlandish concept. While The Shadow possessed the power to cloud men’s minds after his time in the East, The Green Lama relied on other, even weirder, powers — including the ability to become radioactive and electrically shock opponents into submission! He carried a traditional Tibetan scarf, which he employed to bind and befuddle opponents, and possessed a knowledge of vulnerable nerve centers which he put to good use in hand-and-hand combat. Om Mani Padme Hum! The Green Lama knows! The Green Lama returns in vintage pulp tales, reissued for today’s readers in electronic format. $1.49.
