“Rehearsal For Murder” By Frank Bunce. (1957) Mr.
Humble is in trouble again. Back home in New York after unmasking a killer on
the SS Vagabond, people now look up to the accountant in his role of amateur
private detective. When asked to speak
at the Greater-Riverdale-on-the-Hudson-Club, he speaks openly of the city
government corruption, and tells the audience that the police hushed up the
murder of Judge Steven Roper, by calling it suicide. To make matters worse he
even calls a lawyer, Attorney Joseph Standahl a crook and head of the city
crime. His speech goes viral, and thankfully, Dorrit Bly hears about it in
California. Before she can reach New York, Mr. Humble is set up in a frame by
the police, and caught with a prostitute during a raid. Of course, the girl had
called offering information, and the police were waiting for him to appear. Now
he’s stuck in jail, embarrassed, and no sign of release – until Dorrit Bly
arrives with more knowledge of law than the police, and has him out of jail
rickety split. Now all she has to do is smooth things over with Joseph
Standahl, which she does admirably. People are being murdered over the picture
of a dancer. And it all leads back to the judge’s murder. It also involves an
old case of child kidnapping. But the murders are framed to look like suicides.
It will take the stumbling Mr. Humble and the genius of Dorrit Bly and her
photographic memory to unlock the hidden secrets, and unmask another killer.
Originating as a pulp magazine mystery series, Dorrit Bly and Mr. Humble were
brought into paperbacks editions with at least two books. This is the second.
The stories are lots of fun, and I hope I can find more stories featuring this
pair. Highly recommended.

World War One flying aces Robert M. Burtt and Wilfred G. Moore were responsible for bringing the adventures of Army Air Pilot Captain Jim "Red" Albright – a.k.a. Captain Midnight – across the airwaves at Chicago radio station WGN in 1938.
Like his creators, Captain Midnight saw plenty of aerial combat action in the skies over the combat zones in Europe during the Great War. Army Air Pilot Captain Jim “Red” Albright’s back story was that he earned the moniker of “Captain Midnight” after returning back from a high risk mission to an Allied airfield exactly as the clock struck midnight. The General who had sent Albright on the mission called him “Captain Midnight.”
The adventures of Captain Midnight were originally heard in syndication on select mid-western radio stations, including Chicago Radio Station WGN in 1938. Originally sponsored by the Skelly Oil Company, Captain Midnight did not become a nationwide phenomenon on the airwaves until Ovaltine took over sponsorship of the program in 1940 and expanded its range on the airwaves over the Mutual Radio Network.
A love of aviation ran deep within the veins of William G. Skelly. After founding the Skelly Oil Company in 1919, which would eventually become the world’s largest independent oil company; Skelly went on to found in 1928 the Spartan School of Aeronautics and the Spartan Aircraft Company.
Listen as Captain Midnight played by Bill Bouchey, Chuck Ramsey, Patsy Donovan, and Major Steele battle Ivan Shark, his daughter Fury, and Gardo in The Perada Treasure. An Aztec temple and underground waterfall add to the fun of these 88 fifteen minute shows presented in 3 Volumes. Great commercials featuring Skelgas natural gas, a 57 piece Dinnerware set and Captain Midnight Bicycle Tires were offered by the Skelly Oil company.
Captain Midnight has never sounded better thanks to the Radio Archives audio engineering team. Captain Midnight, Volume 2, The Perada Treasure is available now!

Looting, maiming, slaughtering, El Gaucho launched his colossal plot to unite the Underworld — to make himself King of America! No torture was too cruel for him to employ; no deed too bloody; no life too precious, except his own. Richard Wentworth — the Spider, who exacts justice when the Law fails — realized he alone could save America from wanton butchery, in spite of the grim reward posted for his head — its own weight in the purest gold!
Wentworth's best friend, Commissioner Stanley Kirkpatrick, pointedly informed him on one blunt occasion that he would send Richard Wentworth to the death house if positive proof that the wealthy criminologist was really the Spider ever came into his hands. Here lies the genius of Norvell Page’s Spider. Wentworth had a secret identity, but hardly anyone was fooled by it! The white-hot relationships between the cast of characters were mature, even modern by our standards. This while he battled supercriminals such as the Fly, Iron Man and the Bat-Man.

The white-hot relationships between the cast of characters were mature, even modern by our standards. This while he battled supercriminals such as the Fly, Iron Man and the Bat-Man.
Once, during a respite in a typical blood-and-screaming-bullets carnage of urban combat, Police Commissioner Kirkpatrick ticked off a long list of suspects. Wentworth blurted out this self-revealing truth. “I’m suspicious of everyone,” he admitted, “even of myself sometimes.” And well he should be. For Richard Wentworth was an undiagnosed manic-depressive—if not paranoid schizophrenic—subject to violent mood swings, climbing to unutterable heights of exultation in one scene, then crashing into the blackest depths of despair the next. When the Spider-madness came over him, he might pick up his treasured Stradivarius violin and launch into a night-long serenade to soul-searching. Or, he might putty up his face, don black hat and cape, go out Spidering.…

Out of war-torn skies soars…G-8 and His Battle Aces! The greatest combat pilot of the War to End All Wars, G-8’s true name was stricken from all official records. Flying a supercharged warplane, backed by his wild wingmen, Bull Martin and Nippy Weston, G-8 fought the most horrific foes the Kaiser could throw at him.
Patrol of the Cloud Crusher, a particularly wild tale torn from the June, 1936 issue. Hogan outdoes himself by pitting his hero against an astounding threat—titanic disembodied hands reach out of the clouds to ensnare and crush Allied aircraft! Even the Master Spy is baffled.
It begins with a ghostly hand that snatched an important clue and vanished! If that wasn't baffling enough, a patrol flying past a giant cloud encountered a monster arm whose crushing fingers destroyed their warplanes.
Taking to the skies, G-8 rushes to investigate the so-called Hand of Providence that had seemingly taken the German side in the war. But it was one thing to fly into that hell cloud. Quite another to survive the encounter!
When the Flying Spy and his Battle Aces take on the challenge of the Patrol of the Cloud Crusher, will they return––or will their own aircraft be pulverized by the seemingly supernatural power? Herr Doctor Kreuger strikes again!
Nick Santa Maria narrates this ripping yarn of World War I air-to-air combat with his usual mastery.

Just got my latest Radio Archives order in the mail and decided to immediately treat myself to some great Old-Time Radio drama. My only problem was choosing which of the three sets I ordered to listen to first. I finally picked "Dead of Night" & "A Shipment of Mute Fate" from ESCAPE Volume 3 and settled down to give myself a good case of the heebie-jeebies!
Once again I am amazed by the clarity of sound on these CDs. Bravo! You do a beautiful job of restoring these programs and making them sound better than ever. I want to thank everyone at Radio Archives for your commitment to quality.

So Young A Body
“So Young A Body” by Frank Bunce (Pocket Books, 1950).
From the pulps to paperbacks, comes a fun series that originated in DETECTIVE
FICTION WEEKLY, featuring Martimer Peabody Humble and Dorrit Bly. Beginning
when financial accountant Humble takes a cruise on the SS Vagabond, he’s
ashamed of his uninteresting profession, and tells everyone he’s a hardboiled
private detective. Also coming on board is the beautiful Dorrit Bly, a young
girl who works at a law firm. She also has a photographic memory, and never
forgets anything she sees or reads. She also knows how to get her way, and is
an extrovert where Mr. Humble is more an introvert. Unfortunately for the
latter there’s a murder as soon as the ship is assail, and Captain Wren asks Mr.
Humble to solve the case. Dorrit Bly, thinking Humble is really a private
detective, tells him she’ll help, as she’s always wanted to be a detective –
there’s even a hint that she was in the Army, but not in the job she wanted. If
you read between the lines, you know she wanted to be in G-2 intelligence. She
soon learns of his duplicity, however, but guides him through the
investigation. Humble does solve the case, but as usual Dorrit Bly was far
ahead of him, and had everything set up for the final uncovering of the
murderer. There are at least two paperback novels featuring the characters, and
I will be reviewing the second one, “Rehearsal For Murder” in a few weeks.
Although Mr. Humble appears to be the lead in the series, it’s Dorrit Bly who
steals the show. Lots of fun, and another of those pulp characters to move into
paperbacks when the pulps were dying.

"...designed to free you from the four walls of today for a half-hour of high adventure..."
Inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame back in 1997; William Conrad began his radio career in California in the late 1930s. When the United States entered into the global conflict of the Second World War, Conrad put his radio acting career on hold and enlisted, becoming a fighter pilot. After the war ended, he returned to radio and picked up right where he left off. In addition to lending his voice in a record 90 episodes of Escape; Conrad also shared narrating duties on the show. One of the hardest working actor in radio, Conrad appeared in some 7,500 radio shows during his career.
Despite being perhaps one of the greatest adventure anthologies produced during Radio’s Golden Age, Escape never had a regular time slot. During its seven year run starting back in 1947 and ending in 1954, Escape was shifted between time-slots for a record of 18-times. Sometimes Escape even disappeared completely off the weekly radio schedule altogether. Why was Escape treated so poorly by CBS when regular established time slots were crucial in Radio’s Golden Age to build an audience? It’s perhaps one of the great unsolved mysteries of the Golden Age of Radio especially since Radio Life wrote about Escape: “These stories all possess many times the reality that most radio writing conveys.” Perhaps the answer lies in the cold financial fact that Escape had no regular sponsors.
Escape did have sponsors – just not regular, long term ones. Among the companies that sponsored Escape in a fairly limited fashion were the Richfield Oil Corporation of New York, the Ford Motor Company, and the Chrysler-Plymouth Company. One of the reasons why Escape never was able to obtain long term corporate sponsorship was that CBS kept moving the radio program all over a wide range of broadcast times and days.

For Secret Agent “X”, the editor decided to pit him against villains who were maestros of unbridled horror. Melodrama was the rule of the day. But Secret Agent “X” plunged into maelstroms of raw bloodlust undreamed of by The Shadow and Doc Savage. His foes were truly depraved. Terrorists. Torturers. Extortionists. Kidnappers. Stranglers. Fiends. Arsonists. These were the types of torn-from-the-tabloids master criminals “X” hunted. It was grim fare. Before long, The Spider started going up against foes as a maniacal as the ones “X” vanquished every month. But the Man of a Thousand Faces first blazed that terrible trail.
Follow the Man of a Thousand Faces as he confronts the menace of The Murder Monster, ripped from the pages of Secret Agent “X” magazine, December 1934 and read with chilling intensity by Milton Bagby.
