But as Suspense grew in popularity and began to attract a more upscale acting clientele anxious to participate in “radio’s outstanding theater of thrills,” finding someone to pick up the weekly tab became a top priority for CBS. Luckily, on December 2, 1943, the series found its ‘angel’ in the sponsorship of Roma Wines. Suspense’s long association with Roma (and co-branded Cresta Blanca) was good for both the series and the company; a bigger budget attracted bigger guest stars and, as the program began to climb in the ratings, the company began to enjoy substantial profits.
Heard today, Suspense remains a true radio classic — and one for which there are very few equals. As with any series, the programs have their ups and downs but, for the most part, it’s impressive just how well these “well calculated tales” still stand up to critical ears. The best shows in the series - the legendary and much-repeated “Sorry, Wrong Number” featuring a bravura performance by Agnes Moorehead, for instance.
Acclaimed mystery novelist John Dickson Carr was one of the regular script writers for Suspense. Carr is generally regarded as one of the greatest writers of “Golden Age” mysteries - complex, plot-driven stories in which the puzzle is paramount. He was influenced in this regard by the works of Gaston Leroux and by the Father Brown stories of G. K. Chesterton. Carr was a master of the locked room mystery, in which a detective solves apparently impossible crimes. He also created Dr. Fell; who various literary critics and scholars have dubbed as one of the three great successors to Sherlock Holmes - the other two being Father Brown and Nero Wolfe. His 1943 half-hour radio play Cabin B-13 was expanded into a series on CBS in 1948-49 for which Carr wrote all 25 scripts.
